Her father was Peter Maivia, a Samoan professional wrestler, and her mother was Ofelia “Lia” Maivia, who was a famous woman promoter of professional wrestling. She is mostly known as The Rock’s Mom.
Since her childhood, Ata was dreaming of becoming a fashion designer, and she always presented exciting outfits. Ata Fitisemanu was the daughter of Ofelia “Lia” Maivia, who was one of the first-ever women promoters in professional wrestling. She is Ofelia Maivia’s daughter from her first marriage and was later adopted by Peter Maivia, when he married Ofelia Maivia. From that day forward, she became known as Ata Fitisemanu Maivia.
Her father, Peter Maivia, was trained by Steve Rickard and debuted in 1962. In his legacy, he has won 18 heavyweight championships across the world, such as Rikishi, Umaga, Yokozuna, and Roman Reigns. He was also a stunt coordinator and an actor in James Bond: You Only Live Once and a base for character Maui in the 2016 Disney animated film, Moana. He died of cancer, on June 12, 1982.
Ata’s mother, Ofelia ‘Lia’ Maivia was one of the first-ever women promoters in professional wrestling. She took over the Polynesian Pro Wrestling (PPW), following the death of her husband. She died of a heart attack in 2008.
Talking about her parents, Ata said: “My father was so protective of the business that for the first few years he even protected it from my mom and I. Hence during a match in London, England during the early sixties, my mom jumped in the ring, her stiletto heel in hand, to beat the pulp out of the guy that was beating my dad. And my dad was selling it so fantastic, that she was convinced he was done for. The fact that it made headlines the next morning, plus the injuries sustained by dad’s unsuspecting opponent, led to a very serious discussion between Dale Martin Promotions and my dad to smarten the family up!”
Ata Johnson had two brothers, Peter Jr. Maivia, also a wrestler in Hawaii and the west coast, and Toa Maivia, who was not into wrestling.
Johnson met Rocky “Soul Man” Johnson when Peter Maivia and Johnson were tag team partners. She married the Canadian professional wrestler, although her father disapproved of their relationship. Simone Johnson is the eldest daughter of The Rock, from his first marriage to Dany Garcia.
