Career Ups and Downs
Chief Keef grew up on the southside of Chicago, where he was surrounded by a lot of gang activity. He fell into that lifestyle from a young age and he began selling drugs as a way to make some easy money. While not on the block, Chief Keef aspired to be a rapper. He eventually pursued this dream after linking up with a producer by the name of DJ Kenn when he was just 12 years old.
Keef had a violent, dangerous, and unique upbringing. He lived a unique reality compared to the nearly rest of the country. Dj Kenn helped Keef to own his craft, simplified down to just speaking about his reality. As soon as Keef started to put that reality in his music, it started to spread throughout Chicago and eventually around the country. In 2011 he released his debut mixtapes “The Glory Road” and “Bang“.
However, things didn’t start to take off until he started working with Young Chop, which is another producer around the area. The now platinum duo dropped a song titled “I don’t like” that quickly garnered millions of views online. It was so popular that it caught the eye of Kanye West. He made a remix of that song, and from that moment his career officially kickstarted.
The combination of “I don’t like“, and the Chicago gang lifestyle had just about every record label lining up to sign Chief Keef. He eventually signed with Interscope Records for an incredible $6 million deal. In December 2012 he released his debut studio album “Finally Rich“. Chief Keef then released a smash hit from that album called “Love Sosa” which has over 115 million views on YouTube. The album featured numerous guest rappers like 50 Cent, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Wiz Khalifa, and Lil Reese.
However, this deal quickly went south. One big concern everyone in the industry had about Chief Keef was that he might be “too gangster” for the industry. He didn’t listen to anybody and wouldn’t show up on scheduled events such as interviews and music videos. Together with his legal troubles, Interscope decided to drop their deal in October 2014.
Chief Keef then went on to sign a record deal with Alki David’s FilmOnTv. On August 3, 2015, he dropped his second album, “Bang 3“, selling out 63,000 copies. The first part of the album was released in August (“Bang pt.1“) and the second part of the album in September 2015 (“Bang pt. 2“). However, the deal that he made with FilmOnTv meant that Alki gets to keep a percentage of everything Chief Keef does, rather than just the music sales and streams. This deal quickly went south as well, due to Chief Keef and his management not cooperating with FilmOnTv. Alki David ended up suing Chief Keef for $4 million.
Chief Keef later signed to RBC Records, however, it was unknown for how much he signed for. During this time, on November 30, 2017, he released another album called “Dedication“. This album reached on Number 97 on US Billboard 200, and Number 39 on US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
On March 15, 2019, Chief Keef released a mixtape called “Glotoven“, after working together with the producer Zaytoven. That same year, in April he dropped a song with Youngboy Never Broke Again, called “Fireman“. Keef also is working on another mixtape “Almighty So 2“, with features like Uzi Vert, Soulja Boy, and Lil Reese. Chief Keef also released another single titled “Boost“.
