Jerry was born to Elmo Kidd Lewis Sr. and Mary Mamie Herron Lewis in Ferriday, Louisiana, New Orleans. He grew up in an impoverished farming family. During his youth, Jerry began playing the piano with his cousins Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. Mickey became a popular country music star later on.
His parents believed in Jerry and his talents to the point they mortgaged their farm to buy him a piano. He was greatly influenced by his older cousin, Carl McVoy.
When he was young, his mother enrolled him at the Southwest Bible Institute in Waxahachie, Texas. There, he could sing evangelical songs exclusively. His career began when he daringly played a boogie-woogie rendition of My God is Real at a church assembly. He was sent home after the incident but began playing at clubs in and around Ferriday.
Jerry Lewis became a part of the burgeoning new rock and roll sound. He released his first demo recording in 1952 for Cosimo Matassa in New Orleans.
In the 1960s, his live performances were increasingly wild and energetic. He was widely regarded as one of the best in the world. His 1964 live album Live at the Star Club, Hamburg, is still regarded as one of the wildest and greatest live rock albums ever.
In the late 1960s, Lewis made his transition into country music with songs like Another Place, Another Time. It reignited his career, and he managed to top the country-western charts in the 1970s.
During his career, he has won four Grammy Awards. He also has a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement and a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In 1986, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was also part of the inaugural class inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.

His third marriage was a controversial one, to 13-year-old Myra Gale Brown. She was his first cousin once removed. At the time of the ceremony, his divorce from Jane was not finalized. So, he remarried Brown on June 4, 1958. They had two children, Steve Allen Lewis and Phoebe Allen Lewis. Myra was only 14 years old when her first son was born. Sadly, he drowned in a swimming pool at the age of 3.
Myra Gale Brown filed for divorce in 1970, on the grounds of adultery and abuse. In her papers, she stated that she had been subject to every type of physical and mental abuse imaginable.
Jerry’s fourth marriage was to Jaren Elizabeth Gunn Pate, lasting from October 1971 to June 1982. She drowned in a swimming pool several weeks before their divorce was finalized. Jaren and Jerry had a daughter, Lori Lee Lewis.
But let’s talk about his sixth marriage to Kerrie McCarver. This was Jerry’s longest commitment. The couple stayed together for 21 years.
Jerry and Kerri dated for four months before they got engaged in December 1983. Eventually, they got married in April 1984. Jerry called her one of the special ladies in his life.
