january blues

This time of year is always difficult. Christmas is over, resolutions begin, and winter rages on. The UK is in another lockdown and this makes things even harder. As tempting as it can be to curl up in a blanket and just wait for the month to be over, here are some ways to make yourself feel better.

Eat Well

January is filled with toxic diet culture. However, there is a big difference between going on a diet and making healthy food choices. Remember, there is no certain way your body has to look. If you do want to change your eating habits, make sure they’ll work in the long-term. Quick fixes won’t work. Make sure you’re eating a balance of the food groups. Don’t ban yourself from certain foods entirely, otherwise you’ll crave them even more. You can still have chocolates as a treat.

Limit Screen Time

It can be hard not to compare yourself to people on your social media who are making the perfect meal prep or doing daily yoga or living their best life in lockdown. Or perhaps you’ve found yourself doom scrolling and constantly checking the news. Either way, it’s not good for you. Our phones are addictive, but try and limit the time you’re spending on yours. There are tips and tricks you can follow to help you look at your phone less.

Go for a Walk

You may think that going on a walk won’t make much difference, but you’re wrong. Spending time in nature has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health. Even if you give yourself just half an hour to get outside and take in some fresh air, you’ll feel a benefit. You could also check out local walks in your area, there may be some hidden gems that you’ve never seen before.

Look Ahead

2020 was brutal and it’s going to take a while for this year to get better, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Give yourself something to look forward to. It could be something as simple as hugging your loved one or picking the first pub you’ll go to. There are good things coming this year. You’ve just got to get through these next few months.

This time of year is hard, but remember to be kind to yourself. You’re doing the best you can in very strange circumstances. Do you have any tips for beating the January blues?
